Solo travel to digital detox

According to Apartmentservice, 43 per cent of guests used the serviced apartment they booked for holiday and leisure purposes last year - and the trend is rising. But what about the general behaviour of leisure travellers? What do they want?

According to the Hilton 2025 Trends Report, relaxation and recharging their batteries are still the most important motivations for holidaymakers. In future, however, they will increasingly want to combine this with "awe-inspiring adventures and experiences" to make the most of their time and money. Among the 13,000 travellers in 13 countries surveyed by Hilton, 7 out of 10 stated that they enjoy active travel, with one in two planning outdoor adventures in the coming year. "Travellers don't just want to choose their own adventure - they want to maximise every moment of their time away," says Chris Nassetta, President and CEO of Hilton.

Lots of time in the flat, lots of solo travellers

At the same time, 50 per cent want to spend a lot of time in bed or do nothing while on holiday, and more than one in four want to book a spa or wellness treatment to improve their sleep. In Germany in particular, more than one in three travellers say they sometimes sleep better in a hotel than at home, with more than half of 18-34 year olds saying the same. In fact, two out of five travellers in this age group prefer to just relax in the hotel and not leave, while only one in five travellers over the age of 65 do not want to leave the hotel premises.

Overall, 30 per cent of Germans plan to take more leisure trips next year than in 2024. Those travelling with family or friends are primarily looking for authentic experiences. Solo travellers, on the other hand, prefer flexibility, especially if they can meet other solo travellers. Solo travellers also value friendly and helpful staff (46%), suggestions for solo activities (40%) and flexible seating options in restaurants and bars (32%). Among all travellers in Germany, 28 per cent often travel alone, with one in four travelling with a pet.

Digital detox trends

It is also interesting to note that as important as the offer of a digital room key is to most travellers worldwide (63%), one in four now say they disconnect from social media more on holiday than before.
