The entire automotive industry in Germany is currently affected by massive job cuts, as are parts of the steel, chemical and IT sectors. At the same time, the shortage of skilled labour is putting further pressure on German companies, mainly for demographic reasons. According to a study by the German Institute for Economic Research, which analysed trends in 1,300 occupations, Germany will face a shortage of 728,000 skilled workers by 2027.
The sales sector is particularly affected with around 37,000 vacancies, followed by childcare with 27,600 vacancies. Social work and education comes third with a shortfall of 22,200 professionals, although the gap itself will narrow. This is closely followed by health and care and IT. In addition, construction electrical, planning and supervision is one of the top 10 sectors with the greatest shortage of skilled workers in Germany.
Engineers also in demand
Another study by Pens.com/de sees the biggest gap in the engineering sector, with a total of over 80,000 vacancies and a vacancy rate of 46 per cent after 90 days. The results were obtained by analysing the number of vacancies on a job board and the length of time they were available. The retail sector is in second place with over 100,000 vacancies and 39 per cent unfilled after 90 days, followed by customer service with over 17,000 vacancies.
Healthcare - in 5th place - has the highest number of vacancies with a total of 139,455, but only a good third remain unfilled after 90 days. IT follows in 6th place with a total of 38,921 vacancies, and education in 7th place with 'only' 6,899 vacancies, but a long vacancy period.
The language sector has the lowest shortage of professionals of the 15 sectors surveyed.
